The Chastain School at St. John is an educational ministry of the Church. We have created an environment of Christian love and commit ourselves to helping your child grow in many ways by providing a warm, stimulating, and safe learning environment.

We teach the Christian ethic of “Love One Another”. We believe in each child’s individuality and that each child is special. Each child deserves respect, attention and the best developmentally appropriate experiences that our early childhood educational program can provide. Each child is presented with an opportunity to grow in a safe, loving, and encouraging environment. The Chastain School at St. John serves as a support system to help our families raise well-adjusted children. Each child’s success now, or in the future, depends on the close collaboration of teachers and parents who support the child’s intellectual, social, emotional, physical and spiritual growth.

Our core curriculum nurtures, develops and educates children from infancy through preschool, and beyond. Low teacher-to-child ratios, personalized attention, and an intimate setting are core components of The Chastain School at St. John. Our program is Christian-based, so we incorporate Bible study, songs, and classroom activities into our weekly schedule.

The Chastain School at St. John’s fun, exciting environment promotes discovery, imagination, and creativity. Our experienced faculty guide and support each child according to his or her unique needs and interests. The Chastain School at St. John’s curriculum is designed to meet the ever-changing social, emotional, physical, and cognitive needs of young children, helping them to develop the foundation of self-confidence and the foundation for healthy and successful futures.

Play is the language of children and the foundation of any quality Early Childhood Educational Program. We provide opportunities for children to learn through play with a balance of self-discovery and teacher-directed activities.

We believe children learn and develop through play. This philosophy, supported by considerable academic research, including educational centers at Duke and New York Universities, forms the foundation for our educational approach.

“Toys are fun, but toys are also tools that help a child learn about themselves and the world around them,” reads an educational article from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “Play is critical to the healthy growth and development of children. As children play, they learn to solve problems, to get along with others, and to develop the fine and gross motor skills needed to grow and learn.”

Our Philosophy

It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. As they master their world, play helps children develop new competencies they will need to face future challenges. Undirected play allows children to learn how to work in groups, to share, to negotiate, to resolve conflicts and to learn self advocacy skills. When play is allowed to be child driven, children practice decision-making skills, move at their own pace, discover their own areas of interest and ultimately engage fully in the passions they wish to pursue.

Because children learn in different ways and they absorb information best when teaching is tailored to their interests. Our curriculum is a blend of formal programs that include High Scope, Creative Curriculum, Reggio Emilio, and Emergent. Our teachers maintain the preschoolers’ excitement and attention by adapting each week’s preschool lesson plan to the children’s unique needs and interests.

Teachers weave reading, math, science, and social studies into our preschoolers’ days through various independent and collaborative activities. We use games, art projects and word-play to build literacy and other essential skills to prepare children for kindergarten. To the untrained eye, it may appear our children “play all day.” However, each activity during the school day is designed to teach specific skills.

educational benefits include:

  • Circle Time (Large Group)

Children form relationships with peers and learn from one another by sharing ideas. Open-ended questions and discussion teach language, listening, recall and problem-solving skills, and focus on themed topics like seasons, the calendar, and days of the week.

  • Small Group Time

Helps children understand and work on group goals, like building a puzzle or conducting a science experiment.

  • Outside Time/Playground

Promotes large muscle development through running, jumping, climbing, riding

  • Independent Play

Helps build self-esteem and promote reasoning skills.

  • Journal Writing

Helps children refine fine motor skills, build hand-eye coordination, and promotes learning concepts such as recall, creative writing, and spelling.

As a complement to our preparatory curriculum, we offer extra-curricular learning activities, including weekly chapel, Spanish, Playball, ballet, soccer, Kidsports, and Amazing Athletes.

Our goal is to develop the whole child, so they are ready for kindergarten personally, social, and academically. When they graduate from The Chastain School at St. John, they are prepared to enter any elementary school program be it private or public.
